It can be tricky to get rid of a flea infestation in your home. An Integrated Pest Management (IPM) approach is recommended to stop fleas strategically. IPM involves a detailed and thorough property inspection. A professional will check all hot spots and concentrate the flea treatment in those areas. Before conducting pest control, it is necessary to vacuum all the hot spots to clear the area of flea eggs. Vacuum cleaning will also clear dried blood which is a major food source for larvae.
An effective flea treatment involves these essential steps:

There are dozens of ways to stop a flea infestation on your property. The best way would be to book a professional pest control team who can identify the areas in your home with a flea infestation. Booking a pest exterminator also guarantees that you’ll get a long-term solution to a flea infestation.
If you’re not yet ready to book, our team recommends the ff. to help you slow down fleas from spreading in and around your house:
Slice a whole lemon into thin pieces. Place the lemon in a pot with water and bring it to a boil. After boiling it, please leave it to stand overnight for best results. Pour that water into a spray bottle and spray onto areas where fleas are present.
The easiest way to exterminate them is by using botanical dust mixed with boric acid or borate powder. Adult fleas can live for about one week without food. However, flea larvae can survive for several months, so it is important to go for larvae first. This mixture will prevent fleas from spreading.
Botanical dust is one of the oldest natural insecticides, and borate is a mineral that is widely used for making detergents, insecticides, and wood preservatives. As an insecticide, it poisons the flea’s stomach. The mixture of botanical dust and borate acid or powder can be used on your carpet, furniture, bed, and your pet’s bed. After applying this mixture, it is best to leave the house for a minimum of 24 hours. The mixture has to settle for a day. Afterwards, you should clean your bed sheets and vacuum your carpet and furniture to remove the mixture. Remember to use a mask when using this mixture at home.
Put a combination of water and dish detergent in a shallow bowl that will act as a deadly trap for fleas. Fleas will die when they jump onto that bowl.
Fleas are attracted to the light, so it is good to place the bowl with the mixture next to a light source, especially at night. Since fleas are attracted to the light, many will fall into that bowl and drown.
Fleas don’t like the smell of cedar. Put cedar chips in areas infested by fleas. Place cedar chips around your home, especially under your furnishing and near the dog bed. Because many dogs are allergic to cedar, you first need to check if your dog is allergic or not.
If you want to use it in your bed, you can wrap cedar chips using a cotton cloth and put them under your pillow. Not only will your bed be protected from fleas, but it will also smell nice and fresh.
Almost every local pet store has cedar chips for sale. You can also find it in a home improvement store.
By spreading salt over the carpet, salt will absorb moisture and help kill fleas. Salt needs to be small enough to attach itself to the flea, so it is important to use fine-grain salt.
When flea attaches to the salt crystals, fleas will bleed to death as the salt can scratch them while they move.
Leave the salt for at least a week. Afterwards, you should vacuum the carpet to remove dead fleas and eggs.
Most fleas would not survive the vacuum cleaner. Make sure to regularly vacuum infested areas. You don’t need to use a fancy high-power vacuum cleaner because average vacuums will also do the job. Just make sure to throw away used vacuum bags.
You can stop fleas from fully developing by spraying insect grown regulators. This method is usually used to stop a large-scale flea infestation. It is recommended to consult an expert who can identify key areas in your property that needs to be sprayed. Handling dangerous chemicals on your own is also not advisable.
Since fleas are attracted to heat and light, fleas fall into the trap and die. However, flea traps do not offer a lasting solution. It is still best to hire pest control experts for a long-term solution to a flea infestation.
It is recommended to regularly bathe your pet using specialised pet shampoos formulated to stop fleas. Apply the flea shampoo all over your pet’s body, especially near their ears and butt. Take note that fleas could jump and hide in on your pet’s neck, head, and butt. Let shampoo soak for at least ten minutes so it can do its work and kill the fleas. When a dog has been dried, use a comb to remove dead fleas and eggs from the fur.
There are flea drops you can easily buy from a veterinarian. This flea drop can be applied to the neck and can protect your pet from fleas for at least 3 months. Using a flea drop is advisable, especially if you let your pet roam outdoors in the garden.

This spot treatment can be used once per month. The spot-treatment is applied directly to your pet’s skin, mostly between the shoulder blade and several spots down the spine.
You can give your pet oral tablets. Once in the bloodstream, the medicine can attack the flea’s nervous system and save your pet from further harm. This is an immediate treatment that is suitable for bad infestations. Consult your veterinarian first before giving your pet oral tablets.
Bathe your dog with a mixture of vinegar and water to deter fleas. Please note that this is not advisable for cats because their pH is much more sensitive than dogs.
